Letter to the Editor Sent to :
TIMES ,THE (LONDON)
Dear Editor: The recent power outages caused by adverse weather begs the question, are correct maintenance programs being followed? Trees posing a danger to overhead cables should be cut back and line routes patrolled on a regular basis. The recent high winds have not occurred during freezing weather so ice loading of conductors has not been an issue. Flooding of electrical substations (if such has occurred) simply means they have been sited in the wrong place. One hopes that profits have not taken precedence over security of supply. It is usual practice within the industry for all fault incidents to be categorised as to cause of failure. The recent high volume of faults and extensive outage times when analysed should prove whether or not our electricity supply is in safe hands. I do hope we are not kept in the dark. Yours sincerely
